On August 7th, the 2023 OctagonBay International Innovation Forum opened in Yantai. The theme of this forum is Empowering the Future with Battery Materials. The Forum is jointly organized by Peking University, the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province,The People’s Government of Yantai Municipality, Yantai HuangBohai New Area Management Committee, Yantai Municipal Department of Science and Technology, Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd., and School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) of Peking University. Moreover, it is co-sponsored by the Chinese Materials Research Society, the Power Battery Application Branch of the China Industrial Association of Power Sources,and the China Battery Enterprise Alliance.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Han Yaodong, Vice Mayor of Yantai City, and speeches were delivered by Zheng Deyan, Sun Haisheng, and Zhang Jin.
Zheng Deyan introduced the economic and social development of Yantai. He pointed out that this innovation forum is an important platform for deepening cooperation between Peking University, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and Yantai. With the themeEmpowering theFuture withBatteryMaterials, this forum will provide new ideas and new momentum for the high-quality development of the new energy battery material industry and the creation of a green and low-carbon model for Yantai. Yantai City is deeply implementing the “9+N” manufacturing industry cluster cultivation project. New energy battery materials involve the two major industries of green petrochemical and clean energy that Yantai City focuses on cultivating.In addition, Yantai has formed a full industrial chain coveringupstreambattery raw material preparation, “midstream” battery manufacturing, and “downstream” battery applicationswithasolidindustrial foundation and many cooperation chances. He sincerely invited universities and enterprises to cooperate with Yantai and invest in Yantai to achieve a win-win future.

Sun Haisheng pointed out that only by focusing on technological innovation can we seize the opportunity and win the advantage. On the new journey of comprehensively building a socialist modernized country and accelerating the realization of high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement, Shandong has a glorious mission ofleading the way andopening upnew opportunities. As a major economic province on the eastern coast of China, Shandong is rich in science and education resources. Therefore, Shandong is responsible for promoting scientific and technological innovation.The support and leadership of scientific and technological innovation in Shandong Province have significantly improved, which could provide broader development space for various innovative talents and enterprises. He welcomed experts and friends to come to Shandong for innovation and entrepreneurship and looked forward to seeing more technologically advanced and promising projects taking root and bearing fruit in Shandong. Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province will continue to put efforts into organization and coordination, provide good service, and fully support the scientific and technological innovation work of Yantai.

Zhang Jin stated that in recent years, Peking University has continuously improved its organized research and technology achievement transformation model, strengthened cooperation between universities, local schools, and enterprises, and made efforts to connect the original innovation of “from 0 to 1” and the engineering and industrialization implementation of “from 1 to N”. PKU together with Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province and The People’s Government of Yantai Municipality, will build the OctagonBay International Innovation Forum into an annual high-level innovation exchange platform in the field of new materials and a brand event that deeply integrates government, industry, academia, and research center. He pointed out that battery materials have become one of the most promising emerging fields in the field of new chemical materials, and have important supporting significance for promoting the transformation and upgrading of Chinese and global energy structure and developing a low-carbon economy. He expressed his hope that all attendees can speak freely, have in-depth communications, and work together to promote technological progress and industrial development in the field of battery materials.
