In order to further implement the development strategy of north-south integrationand fully promote theconstructionof new engineering disciplines, on the afternoon of February 12th, the 2023 Strategic Seminar and North-South Integration ExchangeSymposiumof the School of Materials Science and Engineering(SMSE)at Peking University(PKU)was held in theconferenceroomH214ofPeking UniversityShenzhen Graduate School(PKUSZ).

At the beginning of thesymposium, Zhang Jin, on behalf ofPKUSZ, welcomed the faculty and staff ofSMSEtoNorthYanyuan.Hepointed out that the integrationof North and South is a very important stepforPKUto promote the construction of new engineering disciplines.In addition,heexpressed hishopes that thissymposiumwill play an importantrole in promoting communication and cooperation between the two sidesandsaid thathe islookingforward to taking this opportunity to deeply explore and jointly create a new blueprint for the construction of new engineering disciplines from various aspects such as disciplinary layout, platform construction, and North-South joint mechanism.

Zheng Jiaxin and Guo Shaojun reported on the north and south schools’party building and talent team construction. They proposed new ideas for integrating the north and south inthe new measures for the talent introduction of PKU. Both of them expressed their expectations for North-South linkage and cooperation. They hope to use the strong influence of PKU and the geographical advantage of the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen, further adhere to follow the conduct of party building, innovate talent introduction and cultivation methods, strengthen talent cultivation mechanisms, and cultivate a group of outstanding technology leading talents for the Party and China.

Feng Yanintroduced the current situation of talent team constructionin PKUSZand proposed ideas and plans for talentconstructionsupported bynorth-south integration. She stated thatPKUSZattaches great importance to the important step in the deployment of the new engineering program atPKU- the integration ofnorth and south,andtalentworkis also a top priority. Therefore, PKUSZhopes to use the integration of north and south as an opportunity to create morebenefits andconvenience for outstanding talents coming to Guangdong and assist in scientific research.She also expressed herhopeofadoptinga more flexible talent policytopromote cooperation between the North and South as soon as possibleand revitalize Shenzhen’s resources.

Lin Honghaitalked abouthisthinking oftalent cultivationunder the background ofnorth-south integration. He explored the integration ideas of both sides in terms of disciplines and goalsand mainlyanalyzedthechallenges that North-South integration may face in terms of enrollment selection, training methods,course construction, etc. He expressed the hope that through joint training and innovative cooperation,they could improvethe quality of talent cultivationandhelpmore outstanding talentstocontinuallystrive in the field of materials science.

Shi Lili proposed her thoughts on theintegration of North and South from focusing on major platform construction, applying for the national key program of technology, promoting science and technology projects based on talents, and promoting discipline construction. She expressed her hope ofpromoting the deep integration of resources as soon as possible, while promoting the implementation of the linkage model of “Tradition of PKU + Vitality of Shenzhen”, strengthening the layout of the five major directions, expanding new areas of cooperation, and achieving new cooperation results with their differences.

Finally, Zou Ruqiang made a conclusion. He stated that this symposium is only the beginning. In the future, they will continue to maintain a good atmosphere of communication and linkage and further implement the specific matters related to north-south integration. In addition, Zou Ruqiang proposed his thinking of north-south integration from the aspects of forming an alliance team, building a major platform, promoting the cooperation between school and enterprise, and strengthening practical training. He said that it is also necessary to create a new paradigm led by CPC in the work of north-south integration, fully integrate the works of party construction and north-south integration, and learn from the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of excellent enterprises. He expressed his hope of taking this symposium as an opportunity to establish long-term, stable and friendly exchanges, gradually promoting north-south integration, finding new ideas for future academic innovation and scientific research development, creating new channels, and embarking on a new journey together.
