On March 15th, the (First) Medical + Club Event of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) was held at the LU Daopei Lecture Hall of PKUPH. Wang Jun, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of the PKUPH, Wang Jianliu, the secretary of the Party Committee of PKUPH and a vice president of PKUPH, Yang Fan, a vice president of PKUPH, Zhao Xiangyu, a vice president of PKUPH; Gao Jie, a deputy secretary of the Party Committee of PKUPH and director of Hepatobiliary Surgery Department; directors from various departments such as Thoracic Surgery Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Hematology Research Institute, Liver and Bile Duct Surgery Department, Liver Research Institute, Sarcoma and Rare Tumor Diagnosis & Treatment Center, Cardiology Department, Digestive Medicine Department, Endocrinology Division, Gastrointestinal Surgery Division, Orthopedics Department, Spinal Surgery Division, Vascular Surgery Department, Otolaryngology Department, Nephrology Division, Inspection Section, Breast Surgery Department, Rheumatism Immunology Division, Bone Tumor Department, Neurosurgery Department, Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Pharmacy Department, Hypertension Department, Health Management Center, Geriatrics etc., and Zou Ruqiang, the Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), Zhang Jing, a Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, Zhou Huanping, the Deputy Dean of SMSE, and Lei Ting, the Assistant Dean of SMSE attended this event. The meeting was presided over by Zhao Xiangyu.

In the speech, Wang Jun stated that SMSE has strong research capabilities and its research directions are very much in line withthe research needs of multiple disciplines at PKUPH. He hopes that everyone can take this event as an opportunity to gather ideas, academic resources, and talents for academic research and cooperation, explore new ideas and approaches together, and contribute more to people’s health.

Zou Ruqiang stated that this event is a milestone in the cooperation between PKUPH and SMSE. He is very pleased to have the opportunity to deepen the communication between the two teams and hopes to further promote their technical exchanges in the future and lay a solid foundation for their cooperation in the field of health and medicine. SMSE will leverage its basic scientific research capabilities to help solve medical problems and better serve clinical services and medical development.

Zhou Huanping introduced the basic information, talent cultivation, discipline construction, scientific research achievements and other aspects of SMSE. She proposed to establish strategic cooperation with PKUPH and jointly build a health research center.

Subsequently, 9 professors and researchers from the SMSE and the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (CCME) of PKU respectively gave brief reports on their research fields and collaboration directions. Professor Zheng Yufeng presented a report entitled “Degradable Metals for Medical Use”; Professor Wu Shuilin presented a report entitled “Intelligent Responsive Antibacterial Materials”; Assistant Researcher Wang Shuren, a member of Professor Hou Yanglong’s team, gave a report entitled “Magnetic Nanobiomaterials” on behalf of Professor Hou; Professor Lv Hua presented a report entitled “Translational Medical Research Based on Polyamino Acids”; Associate Professor Cui Yue presented a report entitled “Biological Sensors for Chronic Disease Monitoring”; Assistant Professor Lei Ting presented a report entitled “Polymer Flexible Biosensors”; Assistant Professor Shen Jie presented a report entitled “Low-Background In Vivo Imaging Materials for Biology”; Assistant Professor Lv Shixian presented a report titled “Polymeric Drug Carrier Materials”; and Assistant professor Huang Zehuan reported on “Supramolecular Polymers and Their Exploration in Biomedical Applications”.

The reports covered a wide range of topics and provided detailed explanations of research findings and outcomes. It sparked extensive and enthusiastic discussions among the attendees. Several department leaders raised questions and expressed interest in collaboration based on their respective fields and clinical experiences.

Academician Zhang Jin, a member of the Standing Committee and a vice president of Peking University and the dean of PKUSZ, also attended the meeting. President Zhang stated that current scientific research should gather strength to serve national strategic needs. Research should be problem-oriented, demand-driven and market-oriented to conduct organized basic research. He hopes that through exchanges and cooperation between PKUPH and SMSE, a new mechanism for the integration of basic research and industrial research chains can be formed soon. President Zhang highly recognizes the platform construction by PKUPH and suggests that both of them should make more contacts, answer questions together, grade papers together and truly combine with clinical practice.

President Wang Jun said that this event is just the beginning, and similar activities will be regularly carried out according to needs in the future. The combination of SMSE and PKUPH’s teams is like the combination of missiles and navigation. Cooperation between powerful teams can achieve accurate delivery. Finally, President Wang quoted a modified saying from Premier Minister Li Qiang at the conclusion of this event: “Sitting in the laboratory, all you see are problems; now that you have come to clinical practice, all you see are new problems. Discovering problems is a good thing and it helps us stay grounded. Everyone here has the potential to drive industry development forward, so we are looking forward to the successful collaboration!”
