On the afternoon of January 8, 2022, works of the winter vacation seminar of School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), Peking University (PKU) was held in B117,Building 2 of Experimental Equipment. Academician Zhang Pingwen, a member of the standing committee of PKU Party Committee and a Vice President of PKU, Academician Zhang Yue, the director of the Academic Committee and a chair professor of SMSE, Academician Chen Xuesi, a chair professor of SMSE, and Professor Pan Feng, the vice president of the Shenzhen Graduate School of PKU and the dean of School of Advanced Materials, and all teachers of SMSE attended the seminar. The seminar was presided over by Academician Zhang Jin, the dean of SMSE.
Vice president Zhang Pingwen communicated with the teachers of SMSE on the construction of the materials discipline of PKU, put forward clear requirements, and expressed his expectations for the next stage of the development of SMSE. He encouraged SMSE to follow the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speech as a guide, deepen the awareness of a high-level research university as a national strategic scientific and technological force in thought and action, solidly promote the construction of first-class disciplines, and devote themselves to cultivating masters and strategic scientists for the country and solving the key scientific and technical problems.

Dean Zhang Jin reportedthe overall development and construction of SMSE in 2021. In the past year, SMSE has made great progress in primary-level party building, teaching team construction, talent training, discipline construction, scientific research, the combination of production and research, academic exchanges, social services, etc. As for the new year, Zhang Jin proposed that SMSE should adhere to the concept of “making materials that bring real benefits to human development”, follow the correct ideological idea of school running, build a high-quality teaching team, improve the high-level talent training system, and wait for the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China with outstanding achievements.

The appointment ceremony of two chair professors and a visiting professor was held during the seminar.In the early stage, upon the recommendation of SMSE and the review of PKU, Zhang Yue and Chen Xuesi, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, were employed as chair professors of PKU, and Xia Yang was employed as a guest professor of PKU. Dean Zhang Jin awarded the appointment letters to the three teachers, warmly welcomed and thanked them for their work in SMSE, PKU.

This meeting discussed several key works of SMSE in the future. Dean Zhang Jin talked about his own thoughts on the construction of talent groups, working teams, research paradigms, and external research institutes. He hoped that on the basis of the current good momentum of talent team building, SMSE would actively build a “big team” focusing on the eight research directions, better meet the national strategic needs and local economic and social development, strengthen organized scientific research, pool and utilize various resources, and “connect the North and the South”, and construct SMSE into a new engineering demonstration model. The teachers actively participated in the discussion and put forward valuable suggestions.

Lei Ting, the assistant dean of SMSE, conveyed the deployment and requirements of PKU on the ideological and political construction of the curriculum and introduced the key works about undergraduate and postgraduate cultivation in the near future. Teachers mainly discussed the new general education courses for undergraduates and the ways of strengthening postgraduate training.

Guo Shaojun, the Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, presided over discussions on issues such as party building, postdoctors, publicity, international affairs and safety. He stressed that SMSE should consolidate the foundation of Party building, pay more attention to teachers’ ethics and conduct, and complete the required tasks of plague prevention and laboratory safety during the winter vacation.

Zou Ruqiang, the Secretary of the CPC School of Materials Science and Engineering Committee and the deputy dean of SMSE, presided over the discussions on discipline construction, scientific research, producing-leaning-researching, donation and other topics. He hoped that the teachers of SMSE would strictly abide by the national laws and school regulations, grasp favorable policies, actively participate in the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and strive for more social resources for SMSE.

Dean Zhang Jin expressed his thanks to the teachers for their great suggestions and advice in the conclusion. He pointed out that the work of SMSE will fully absorb their opinions and suggestions. He hoped that everyone would work together, continue the in-depth discussions on work in key areas in one heart, solidly promote the construction of new engineering disciplines, and strive to build a materials discipline with international influence and characteristics of PKU. At the end of the seminar, Zhang Jin, on behalf of SMSE, wished the teachers all the best in the New Year.
